Several processes are used to manufacture poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) and poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (hereinafter PMPI and PPT, respectively). For instance, U.S. Pat. No. 3,869,429 (Kurtz) discloses a process for the manufacture of PPPT by preparing an aqueous solution of a dicarboxylic acid, such as terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid, and a diamine such as 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-diamino diphenyl, in a molar ratio of from about 1.0:1.0 to about 1.4:1.0, evaporating the aqueous solution to remove water, heating the resulting mixture at a temperature in the range of from about 150.degree. to about 200.degree. C., and thereafter reacting the resulting melt with ammonia to form PPPT. When using terephthalic acid in the process, the resulting product is known as poly(p-phenylene isophthalamide) or PPPI.
A drawback of the process disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,869,429 is that the poly(p-phenylene isophthalamide) produced by the process is yellow in color. This color imparts a yellow tint to the yarns formed from the poly(p-phenylene isophthalamide).
